Autumn has arrived, temperatures have dropped and invegetable garden increases the risk of frost. How can we protect ours vegetables from frost? In the months of November and December, the horticulturist is forced to interrupt the activity; there is little light and with the frost the vegetables to be able cultivate there are few: cauliflower, escarole, lettuce, parsley, radish, chicory, thistle, radicchio ... if you have not already protected these vegetables, today we will explain how to build a tunnel greenhouse to keep them safe.

When the tunnel greenhouse it is not needed
Before resorting to the tunnel greenhouse, know that you can also take advantage of non-fixed structures. If crops need to be sheltered for only 3-4 weeks, it is possible to resort to veils of non-woven fabric laid out directly on the vegetable garden. In this case, the non-woven fabric will have to be spread over the flower beds before the frost begins.

How to build a tunnel greenhouse, what is needed:

  • Bows
  • Galvanized iron wire
  • Anchor stake
  • Clasps
  • Cloth
  • Lanyard

How to build a tunnel greenhouse
From your trusted blacksmith, get bows 2.4-2.5 meters long and 10.12 mm in diameter. The bows will form the skeleton of yours tunnel greenhouse, these will be positioned at 80-120 cm from each other and the ends will be buried at a depth of about 20 cm.

To make the tunnel, connect the arches with a galvanized iron wire that will be fixed to the ground with an anchor stake in both ends of the tunnel. At this point you have to spread the cloth along the arches. The cloth will be fixed with special clips that hook it to the arches. To secure the entire structure to the ground, you can use pegs and a cord that will straddle the sheet: the plasticized cord must be hooked to the pegs that will be buried in staggered positions on both sides of the tunnel greenhouse. It is necessary to arrange the pegs at a suitable distance from each other so as to allow the opening of the tunnel greenhouse simply by lifting the sheet to the side.

How to build a tunnel greenhouse, the alternative
A milder, but still valid, possibility is that of fasten the cloth with plates arranged laterally. Of course, the result will not be as professional as in the case of the use of pegs, lanyards and clips, but it will be just as effective.
